World Bank Group – Lagos, Nigeria: Background Ambient Air Monitoring

Myramid Analytical performed an ambient environmental monitoring program for the World Bank Group at Lekki Port, Itoke Village, Lagos, Nigeria.

This program which included Ambient Air Monitoring and Sound Monitoring, was conducted at to determine the background levels of criteria pollutants and sound. This data was used to provide information on the potential impact of construction on the ambient air quality and to provide air quality data to satisfy applicable regulatory agency requirements. Design and testing location selection followed the guidelines listed in The Code of Federal Regulations, Title 40, Part 58, (40CFR58), Appendix D, “Network Design Criteria for Ambient Air Monitoring.”


The pollutants tested included Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), Total Suspended Particulate Matter (PM-TSP), Particulate Matter less than 10 micron (PM10), and Particulate Matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5). A perimeter background noise survey of the site property line was also conducted.

In the design of the sampling program many factors were taken into account including the project schedule, meteorological conditions throughout the year, access to the sampling locations and utilities and security. Throughout the year, the weather pattern changes between designated “Dry” and “Rainy Seasons.” The sampling sites included influences from nearby villages, the Sahara to the north and the Gulf of Guinea to the south.
